Weekly News 12.07.24
Hi everyone,
I hope you’ve all had a good week. There is a lot of information in this week’s newsletter, so I thank you in advance for reading to the end.
We’ve had a very busy week in school with lots to celebrate.
At the start of the week, our two transition mornings went really well and we welcomed new staff and children to Bicton.
Our Year 6s received their KS2 SATs results and their hard work this year and positive attitude during SATs week is shown in their results. We are incredibly proud of each and every one of them!
As well as most of our Year 6s going to The Corbet School for 2 days for their transition, we’ve also welcomed two Corbet Year 10 pupils – past Bicton pupils – on work experience.  They have been amazing help in class and we will be sad to see them leave!
Well done to our Year 6s who took part in a rounders tournament at The Corbet School on Wednesday morning. They all played brilliantly and one of our teams won the tournament – we are very proud to have the area shield back in Bicton School for the next year!
Letters out this week

Free Summer reading challenge
For those new to it, the Summer Reading Challenge is an annual partnership between the Reading Agency and public libraries all over the UK, which invites primary aged children to sign up to read 6 library books of their choice over the summer break.
For every 2 books completed, they receive stickers to complete their welcome packs, with fun activities along the way. At the end, they earn a medal and certificate.
The challenge is completely flexible and is intended to be fun, so if 6 books is not a suitable target then you are free to set your own.
Perhaps a keen reader would prefer a target of 10 books instead, or someone who is new to chapter books might like to set a target of 2 over the summer.
Whatever your reading challenge looks like, Shropshire Libraries are ready to celebrate it with you! Visit your local library to find out more and book on to one of their special events.

Safer Schools Update
As I shared in my newsletter last week, we were really pleased with such a positive response to the Safer Schools survey.
Some parents/carers were concerned about vehicles parking around the island which causes a hazard to both pedestrians (especially children) and other vehicles. We ask you not to park around the island, to support us as a school in keeping everyone safe.
Concerns were also raised about traffic on Bicton Lane and the absence of a pedestrian crossing. This is an issue at most schools and, as a public highway, schools have no authority or jurisdiction. However, as a school we will continue to include road safety training in our curriculum.
Please see an update below from Ian Bartlett – Safer Schools Officer at Shropshire Council.
Congratulations to Bicton CE Primary School and Nursery on maintaining the Safer School accreditation. Mrs Johnson recently held a Safer School meeting at the school and it was well supported by pupils. A thorough meeting, covering all aspects of the security/safety process. This included a pro-active approach to security/safety, consultation with parents/carers/pupils through surveys and feedback, reflecting on any school issues and planning for the future. Overwhelmingly good feedback from the parent/carer and pupil surveys, including both constructive and lovely observations. It was a positive meeting and the pupils were really involved and contributed to the meeting – excellent work.
In recognition of the school’s responsible approach to security, safety and safeguarding, the school was presented with an updated Safer School certificate and a future meeting is planned for summer 2025.
