Intent of our Physical Education Curriculum
At Bicton C.E. Primary School and Nursery, we recognise the importance of Physical Education (PE) and the role it plays in promoting long term healthy lifestyles. The intent of our PE curriculum is to provide all children with high quality PE and sport provision. It is our vision for every pupil to succeed and achieve their potential, as well as to lead physically active lifestyles. We have designed a curriculum which inspires our pupils through fun and engaging PE lessons that are enjoyable, challenging and accessible to all. We want our pupils to appreciate the benefits of a healthy and physically active lifestyle. Through our teaching of PE, we will provide opportunities for pupils to develop values and transferrable life skills such as fairness and respect, as well as providing them with opportunities to take part in competitive sport.
We are extremely proud that our children take part in a variety of sporting competitions. The children demonstrate a great sense of pride when they are able to represent the school in a local competition, whicah allows many children to experience playing sport in a competitive environment for the first time. It also allows them to discover new passions within sport e.g. in 2022, a group of children took part in a New Age Kurling competition. All children at Bicton are given the opportunity to take part in competitions within their PE lessons. They also take part in our school Sports Day. representing their school house in different athletic activities; this enables all children the opportunity to showcase and apply the skills they have learnt.
Research has shown a direct link between children’s physical and mental health and therefore we aim to provide experiences which will inspire pupils to not only develop physically but ensure mental wellbeing and a desire to succeed.
Implementation of our Curriculum
At Bicton, children will learn Dance, Gymnastics and Athletics for one term each year. Alongside this, the children will take part in a wide range of sports to provide them with a broad and balanced curriculum. The children will also take part in Outdoor and Adventure activities, to learn about the importance of teamwork. The children will also complete orienteering challenges which will create a cross-curricular link through the use of maps in Geography.
Furthermore, every child in the school will take part in the Daily Mile initiative. This is an opportunity for 15 minutes of daily exercise where children can choose to run, walk or skip. This initiative has proven to improve the focus and concentration of the children in the classroom and also to improve their general fitness.
In Nursery and Reception, the children take part in multi-skills, Yoga and Dance, which will help the children to develop their gross motor-skills and improve their hand eye coordination. The children also take part in activities in our own Forest School, where they can safely climb trees, and this will help to build their resilience. These sports and activities provide the building blocks for children to become competent and confident in PE, as they progress through Bicton.
In Year 1 and Year 2, children will learn take part in multi-sports, which will focus on different skills such as using a bat and a ball, and also throwing and catching. This will help to further develop the children’s coordination skills before they attempt to take part in more challenging sports.
Once the children reach Year 3 and Year 4, they will take part in Tag Rugby, Hockey, Tennis, Football, Netball and Kwik Cricket. They will also begin taking part in Swimming lessons.
Throughout the children’s time In Year 5 and Year 6, children will also take part in Football and Kwik cricket. However, the skills which will be taught will be more advanced and the children will begin to learn more tactical elements to the games. Children will also be introduced to Basketball, Rounders and Dodgeball.
Children in Year 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to take part in the Sport Leadership award. This is a chance for the children to plan and organise sport activities which can be delivered to children in the younger years during lunch times. This gives children the chance to develop their communication and teamwork skills. and also allows them to become independent and responsible learners. Children in these year groups will also have the opportunity to take part in being a match reporter. This is a chance for children who have a real strength in writing to write a match report for the school website, to allow parents to understand what took place during the event.
The teaching of PE is enhanced through PE specialists/sports coaches who teach each class in the school over the course of the year. This, combined with the high-quality teaching from Bicton staff, helps to ensure that the children are given the best start to their PE education and that they are fully prepared for starting secondary school.
We also provide opportunities for children to foster their love of learning through taking part in clubs, including Diddy Rugby, Football, Tag Rugby, Netball or Rounders club.
