Intent of our Art Curriculum
Bicton School’s Art curriculum has been designed to spark imagination and inspire creativity. Art provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and to express their individual interests, thoughts, emotions and ideas. Our curriculum has appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding to explore, create and evaluate artwork as set out in the National Curriculum. The children will also explore their own and others’ cultures through the study of various artists.Â
Implementation of our Art Curriculum
Our curriculum has been structured so that the children develop their techniques, including their control and use of materials, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design. The children will begin by exploring and practising each skill and then build on them in each key stage. Where possible, skills are taught through topics to ensure children’s learning is relevant, in-depth and meaningful. Â
In the Early Years, pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated and adult directed activities. Â
Throughout Key Stage 1, children are taught to use a range of materials to design and create their own pieces of artwork. Children will learn skills including painting, printing, collage and drawing. Our children will be exposed to a variety of art work and complete artist studies, learning about the artist and practising the skills they used, then using these skills to create their own piece of artwork.Â
In Key Stage 2, opportunities to revisit previously taught skills will allow children to develop their techniques with creativity, experimentation and increased control. Children will further develop their use of sketchbooks to record their ideas and review them throughout the key stage. Skills taught include sculpture, drawing, textiles and printing. Children will have been taught painting techniques in KS1 and LKS2 so in UKS2 they will revisit and develop these skills.
Impact of our Art Curriculum
By the end of our art curriculum, we want pupils to have learned, improved and embedded a range of artistic skills. We hope to provide our children with the opportunity to explore creatively and understand what it means to be an artist. Throughout each topic, children’s skills, knowledge and understanding will be monitored and teachers will use this information to inform future lessons, ensuring children are supported and challenged appropriately. Â
We will measure the impact of the art curriculum through pupil voice, self-assessment, and using images of the children’s artwork. The children’s sketchbooks, used to record ideas and skills, will show progression and application of skills throughout Key Stage 2.Â
