English – At the start of the week the children were planning their own story.  They made notes on who the main character was, what they see / what they do in the story and how their story will end.  They had lots of interesting ideas for their stories and we are looking forward to reading them next week.

In Read, write, inc the green group have been reading ‘In the bath’ and writing about what they like and dislike about having a bath.  The yellow group have been reading ‘Jam tarts’ and writing their own shopping list.  The rest of the class have been working well independently improving their use of sentence starters in their writing.  They played a game in pairs to use a range of sentence openers, e.g. starting their sentences with a conjunction, noun, adjective, adverbs, feelings and similes.  Then they wrote a short story including a range of exciting sentence starters and interesting vocabulary.  They had lots of ideas first about their story and how they were going to link their ideas.

Maths – This week we have been focusing on multiplying numbers by 2, 5 and 10.  Many  of the children are now much more confident with these times tables from all their practise at home.  They have been using equipment such as counters to make groups of 2, 5 and 10 and solving problems by making different groups of these multiples and showing all their working out using drawings and number sentences.

Science – This week the children joined in with a discussion about how we can ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’.  They came up with lots of ideas about how we can do this to help our environment.  They also designed posters to explain to others how they can follow this principle.

English – This week the children have been using their plans from last week to start writing a newspaper report based on the Great Fire of London.  They have been including facts about what happened, an eye witness statement and using conjunctions and adverbs to improve their sentences.

 In Read, Write, Inc blue group have been reading ‘Snow’ and writing about playing the snow.  Red group have been reading ‘A mouse in the house’ and writing instructions for how to look after a mouse.  Both groups have been remembering to include extra detail in their written work, including adjectives and conjunctions.  The rest of the class have been using words with the ‘ar’ sound to write sentences, then writing a phoneme spotter story using as many ‘ar’ words they have looked at this week.

Maths –  At the start of the week the children were problem solving by writing and drawing multiplication sentences to support their working out.  They have also been using arrays to see the relationship between multiplication facts and the difference between them, e.g. 5 x 2 and 2 x 5.  They have been solving further problems by using a group of objects (e.g. 8 counters) and finding as many arrays as possible they can make from these.

Science – This week we continued to look at where materials come from, if they are natural or man-made and finding out any other information.  We found out about wool, paper and glass.  The children were able to discuss previous knowledge about these materials aswell and we have had lots of interesting discussions about their uses.

Class 3 had a wonderful day celebrating World Book Day yesterday.  Thank you so much for all your efforts with their costumes, they all looked great!  We started the day off sharing our favourite books and writing a book review.  Then the children were involved in a range of activities which they really enjoyed.  They made wooden spoon puppets of their favourite book character, bookmarks, character masks and designed a new front cover for their favourite book.  It was lovely hearing about their favourite books during the day.

English – This week the children have been identifying features of a newspaper report by finding the facts, an eye witness statement and conjunctions.  They then used these features to help them plan their own newspaper report about the Great Fire of London, including a headline, facts, answering where/why/how/who/what questions and a quote about the events.

In Read, Write, Inc the green group have been reading ‘Billy the kid’ and have written descriptions about the troll in the story, thinking about describing it’s eyes, skin and feet using lots of interesting adjectives.  The yellow group have been reading ‘Hunt the tortoise’ and have written an invitation to a picnic, thinking carefully about including all the features discussed, e.g. who it’s to, where it is, when it is.  The rest of the class have been working independently revising the ‘ar’ sound in words and have written their own phoneme spotter story using as many ‘ar’ words as possible which they have looked at this week.

Maths – We have been adding equal groups together and writing a number sentence to describe what each groups shows (repeated addition).  The children have also been introduced to the multiplication symbol and have been writing further repeated addition and multiplication sentences to represent groups of objects.  They have also been solving multiplication problems using their knowledge of the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Science – We watched a range of short video clips about where different materials come from (wood, plastic, rock, metal and ceramics).  The children found out and discussed where materials come from, whether they are natural or man-made and found out additional information about the materials they have looked at.

World Book Day – Please can all children bring in their favourite book next Thursday (7th March) so we can share them in class.  We are looking forward to an exciting day of activities!

English – In Read, Write, Inc this week the blue group have been reading ‘In the night’ and the red group have been reading ‘In the park’.  The rest of the class have been working independently to add the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to adjectives, e.g. strong/stronger/strongest.  They were reminded of the rules from last week of how to change the endings of words: words ending in y – change the y to an i then add er/est, words ending in e – knock off the e before adding er/est, words ending in a vowel and consonant – double the consonant before adding er/est.  They then used these words in their own sentences, ensuring they made sense.

Maths –  This week we have started a new unit, ‘multiplication and division’  The children have been recognising equal groups of objects and making equal groups of objects.  They have been explaining how different groups have been arranged and using drawings / repeated addition to support their working out.

Science – In science we have been looking at properties of materials.  The children used a simulation activity to test different materials by replicating what happens in real life.  They tested the materials to see if they were waterproof, flexible, strong and transparent.  They then found out and discussed which material is suitable for a series of items and why, e.g. windows are made out of glass because they are transparent and waterproof.

English – This week in read, write, inc the green group have been reading the story ‘Red Ken’ and the yellow group have been reading ‘Look out!’  The rest of the class have been working independently to add the suffixes ‘er’ and ‘est’ to an adjective, e.g. short – shorter – shortest and using these in their own sentences to show comparisons.

Maths – In maths the children have been using their previous knowledge and understanding of addition and subtraction to apply this to solving two-step money problems.  They have all worked really hard to decide which operation to use in each problem, discuss their reasoning and show all their working out clearly.

The children have also carried out assessments in reading and mathematics this week and they have all worked really hard to demonstrate their understanding in these areas.  Well done!

Science – This week the children worked in groups to look at a range of properties of materials, e.g. rough, brittle, flexible and discussed what each one meant.  Some were trickier than others and we discussed these as a whole class.  They then found some examples of each type of property, e.g. a waterproof jacket, a transparent window.

English – At the start of the week the children did some fantastic diary writing linked to the Great Fire of London.  They wrote about Samuel Pepy’s thoughts and feelings and what he might have seen.

In Read, write, inc the blue group read ‘The greedy green gremlin’ and the red group read ‘The foolish witch’.  The rest of the class worked independently using the suffix ‘ly’ to turn adjectives into adverbs.  They changed words and used these in their own sentences, remembering to use interesting vocabulary and conjunctions to extend their ideas.

Maths – This week the children have been finding totals of amounts of money and using these in problem solving and reasoning style questions.  They have been thinking carefully about explaining our answers and finding the most efficient method to solve each problem.  The children have also been using their knowledge of using multiples of 2, 5 and 10 to help find the answer.  At the end of the week they were finding the difference between two amounts of money.  They used equipment such as a number line to help them count on or back depending on the numbers used.

Science – The children have been testing properties of materials this week.  They used a range of objects made from materials such as plastic, wood, rubber and fabric to test for a number of proprieties including if they could bend, twist, squash, stretch, scratch or rip them .  They had lots of fun testing these!

English- The children have been linking their English work with topic work this week.  They wrote an information text based on how and why the fire started and why it spread so quickly.  Their focus was to write sentences to describe the main events of the Great Fire of London, use subheadings/paragraphs to separate their ideas and use conjunctions to extend their sentences.  They all wrote some fantastic pieces of information about the fire – well done!

In Read, write, Inc this week green group have been reading ‘Flip frog and the bug’ and yellow group have been reading ‘My best shirt’.  Both groups have worked really hard with their sentence work to change them and add extra detail.  The rest of the class have been working independently using the suffix ‘-ly’ to turn adjectives into adverbs.  They have written lots of super sentences using these words and extending their ideas using interesting vocabulary and conjunctions.

Maths – The children have been doing lots more practical work with money and their skills have really come along, especially using their knowledge of counting in multiples of 5 and 10 to add coins/notes together more efficiently.  They have been focusing on selecting money from an amount given to them, making the same amounts of money using pence (mainly using 5p, 10p and 20p coins) and comparing amounts in either pounds or pence.

Science – This week the children explored how some objects can be made from more than one material, e.g. a window can be made from glass or plastic.  They looked at more examples together and sorted objects into a Venn diagram using plastic and wood as the headings.  Some children also had a go at sorting their own materials and objects.
