Class 5 spellings to be tested 19.09.14

Class 5 have ‘chosen’ their spelling words this week, after making a bank of vocabulary whilst reading WarHorse.  These are words linked to WWI which they will be able to make use of in different writing activities over the next couple of weeks.  As well as learning to spell these words, I would like children to learn the meaning of these words to support our discussions in class. We have a wide range of topic books in Class 5 so please do not hesitate to speak to me, if your child needs any support with this week’s homework.

Class 5 News 12.09.14

Literacy

We’ve continued reading WarHorse, linked to our WWI topic, looking at the different types of sentences used and using dictionaries to define more sophisticated vocabulary.

Towards the end of the week, we wrote diary entries in role as different characters from the text and almost ended the week in a class debate on should members of our royal family fight on the battle front; this wasn’t planned and developed purely from a Year 6 discussion on how army officers can be sent to the front without ever having seen combat. I was extremely impressed with Year 6s’ maturity and enthusiasm regarding this aspect of the text!

Next week we will continue with diary entries and also write letters home from the trenches.

Numeracy

We have continued with and extended our work on place value, including ordering and comparing decimals and using column additon to add money amounts. Next week we will look at column addition and different methods of subtraction in various contexts including money.

Keep up the hard work Class 5!

Class 5 News

Year 6s have certainly shown today that they are ready to take on the responsibility of ‘being Year 6s’ and Year 5 children seem to be settling into Class 5 well – so far so good!

As your child may have already come home and explained, Mrs Chadwick will be leaving to go on maternity leave in a matter of weeks so will be teaching Class 5 with myself for the next few weeks. Mr Kelly will also be teaching in Class 5 on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday mornings.

Should you have any queries or questions, please do not hesitate to speak to me.

Thanks for your support.

Mrs Natalie Johnson
