Final Forest School for Year 5

We had a lovely final Forest School session on Wednesday. The children collected lots of sticks for the fire and then enjoyed a hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows. I have really enjoyed having year 5 for Forest School and thank you all for being such a great experience!

Forest School Session 5

Last weeks Forest School saw children making very creative pieces of art out of natural materials and great shelter building!

Assembly request!

Please could all Class 5 children come to school on Friday wearing a black outfit? This can be black leggings/trousers and a black tshirt/jumper, or a black skirt and black tights.  If you don’t have any black clothing then dark grey or navy is fine.  We would be grateful if the children could bring their school polo-shirt and jumper/cardigan to change into after the assembly.

We are really looking forward to Friday and hopefully we will see you there!

Secondary School Applications

Shropshire Council have asked us to remind Year 6 parents of the need to submit your application by 31st October. Please see further detail below:
A couple of the secondary schools are already very close to their admission number with 1st preferences so it is to the parent/carer’s advantage to ensure their applications are submitted on time.

Late applications are considered last, once all the on time applicants have been allocated their school places. This means that the pupil is at risk of not being allocated a place at their catchment/nearest or preferred schools.
Thank you

Class 5 Weekly Update

English

In English we began the week by publishing our newspaper articles. Most of the children are now really confident with using formal and informal language in their writing. We then moved on to writing a soliloquy from Macbeth, showing his dilemma about whether or not to kill his friend Banquo in order to stay on the throne. The children came up with some amazingly vivid descriptions, and then we redrafted these soliloquys making sure that our punctuation and cohesion was just as good as our language.

Maths

In maths this week we began the week by looking at square and cube numbers. Year 5 were solving some puzzles, also using their knowledge of factors and multiples. Year 6 were applying their skills to solving problems. We then moved on to order of operations (Year 6), and following ‘BIDMAS’ in order to find the correct solution to problems. They really enjoyed this and became confident in applying this method. Year 5 concentrated on mental arithmetic for the end of the week, and how to reorder calculations in order to make them easier to solve in their heads.

D.T

In D.T this week, the children created their final bread roll designs. They have all chosen a type of flour, a flavouring, and a shape for their rolls. They then wrote the list of ingredients they would need and the method they will follow. We will be baking these next week so check back for photos!

R.E

In R.E, we recapped on the first of the five pillars of Islam; Shahadah. We discussed the declaration of faith, and what Muslims believe. The children then discussed and recorded their own personal beliefs in all aspects of their lives.

P.E

In P.E this week, we continued to develop our routines using counter balance and counter tension. The children also included benches and mats in their routines, which were brilliant! They have also continued basketball with Mr Bebb.

History

In history this week, we had a very exciting afternoon working out how the Ancient Egyptians built the pyramids. We experimented using an upturned table with children sitting on it, and ropes. The children had to come up with a system for moving the table smoothly and easily. We then watched a video of a pyramid worker set in Ancient Egypt, and ordered the different steps for building a pyramid.

Class 5 Tweets

We have introduced ‘Class Twitter’ into Class 5.  The children are encouraged to ‘tweet’ about something new they have learned, something new they have tried, their biggest success or questions they still have.

It has got off to a brilliant start with a great set of tweets to start the week!

Class 5 Weekly Update

English

In English we have concentrating on the use of formal and informal language. This week, the children wrote an extract from either Macbeth or Lady Macbeth, using formal language. They then drafted a newspaper article in which they are quoted from this extract. We looked at the features of newspaper articles, and how we could include these in our own articles.

Maths

In maths this week we have been revising finding factors of numbers. Year 5 have been finding common factors of numbers, and Year 6 have been problem solving and reasoning. We have also learned about prime and composite numbers by creating prime factor trees, and Year 5 have been learning the prime numbers below 20. Year 6 finished the week by learning about common multiples of numbers, and solving some tricky problems using their knowledge of factors and multiples. Some children also had a go at an online game; making a chain of factors and multiples. If they would like to have a go at home, the game can be found following this link:

Factors and Multiples Game

D.T

We continued our bread-making unit this week. The children had a brilliant time on Tuesday afternoon doing different bread related activities! They sifted different types of flour and thought about what kind of bread each flour would make, they tasted different bread rolls and described what they liked and disliked about them, they made and shaped salt dough bread roll designs to see which shapes were most successful, and they smelt a variety of spices that would have been available to the Ancient Egyptians to see which one they wanted in their own roll.

R.E

In R.E this week, we shared our ideas to describe the Muslim faith, based on all the knowledge they have gained so far this term. The children generated some fantastic ideas; generous, committed, faithful, peaceful, respectful and more. The children then created their own plan describing all the people and things that they were respectful of in their own lives.

P.E

In P.E the children worked in pairs to create a presentation using all the skills they have learned over the last few weeks which included moving symmetrically, counter balance, and counter tension. They have also continued invasion games with Mr Bebb on Friday afternoon.

This week in Forest School

This week the children had lots of fun looking for mini beasts. We used magnifying sheets to look closer at the bugs and identified the species using identification cards.

Last Week in Forest School

Apologies for no photos last week – year 5 children made ‘journey sticks’. They walked around the site and found things they found interesting and then attached them to their chosen stick with lengths of wool. Others chose to carry on making shelters, these are getting very impressive!

Open Door

Year 6 had a brilliant day at Shrewsbury Abbey.

They did lots of different activities; silk painting, mosaics, creating a stole, maths models and many more!
