Fibre optic broadband posters

Just a reminder to children in Classes 4 and 5 that the closing date for the fibre optic broadband posters is Friday 14th March. The poster should sum up what fibre optic broadband would mean to your household e.g. faster download speeds, and the winning design will be displayed on the green cabinet on Holyhead Road at the end of Bicton Lane.

If you have any questions, please speak to Mrs Johnson or Miss Barratt.

Many thanks

Classes 4 and 5 Football

Football Club will start again this week on Wednesday from 3:15 until 4:25 only for Classes 4 and 5. We are hoping to restart football for the other classes in the next couple of weeks.
The field has started to dry out but is quite muddy so football boots are preferable but otherwise old trainers will be ok.
Many thanks.

This week in Class 4…..

Literacy

We have been continuing with our work on adventure stories this week. We began the week by learning how to make our writing exciting. We talked about our use of punctuation and the use of short sentences and then had a go at writing the train chase scene from Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers in an exciting way. We have also finished reading our class story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we have done some work storyboarding this ready for a display. We have focused specifically on the structure of an adventure story.

Maths
In our maths lessons this week we have been doing some investigations on measurement and weight. We have investigated whether our feet are both the same length and have had a go at measuring each other and converting the measurements into decimals. We have also been estimating and weighing items and converting these measurements as well as investigating different ways of making 1kg.

Other
Other highlights this week include finding out about the capital city of Spain, Madrid and finding out about some famous landmarks. In science we have continued our work on materials. The children were set the task of giving a presentation explaining all the good things about a material they were given. They had to persuade me that their material was the best by telling me about its properties and what it could be used for. We have also enjoyed learning about the story of Moses in RE and continuing our work on balance in PE.
All in all it’s been a good week, well done Class 4, keep up the hard work!

Class 4 Science

We’ve had great fun continuing our science work on materials. The children were put into groups and each group was given a specific material. Their task was to create a poster and presentation to try and persuade me that the material they had been given was the best material out of all of them. They had to think of all it’s properties and all the things that it could be used for. I was so impressed with how each group rose to this challenge and worked really hard!

This week in Class 4…..

Literacy

In literacy this week we have been continuing with our work on adventure stories. We have been using our ICT skills to create a poster all about our favourite adventure story. We included an outline of the story, key characters as well as giving reasons for why we like it. We have also watched the film Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers and discussed how films create excitement and tension and thought about how we can do this when we do our writing. This will be helping us with some writing we will be doing next week!

Maths

We have been continuing with practising our written methods for addition and subtraction. We have used the expanded and compact method for addition and using these to solve problems. For subtraction we have had Kermit the Frog helping us with our counting on – he has been helping us to remember where to jump to. Some children have also been using the expanded column method for subtraction and they have picked it up really well!

Topic

We have been learning about the countries that make up the UK and beihave been locating them, as well as Shrewsbury, on a map of the UK. We have also been studying maps of Europe and have been locating England and Spain. The children have also been creating their own maps of Spain, making sure they include some physical features.

Other

Other highlights have included – creating a glossary of properties of materials to help us in Science, learning about some Jewish milestones in RE, balancing in different ways in both floor work and on the apparatus in PE, discussing bullying and what to do about it in PSHE and enjoying reading our class story, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
