Class 2 weekly update

English: This week we have finished off our instructions unit, we make Chocolate Easter nests and then wrote a set of instructions on how to make them.

Maths: We have had a revision week in maths, year 1 have been revising work on number bonds to 10 and 20 and year 2 have been finding 1/4 and 3/4 of amounts.

Science: We finished our Science topic ‘Materials’ this week looking at different inventions and the materials that are used to make them.

History: To finish our ‘Castles’ topic the children have designed their own personal shields.

Spellings: Spellings to be tested on Friday 28th April.

Homework: Year 1 are coming home with an Easter Diary that I’d like them to fill in over the holidays. I would like year 2 to complete pages 12 and 13 in their Maths SATs book and pages 16, 17, 18 and 19 in their English SATs books. They have also got a copy of the Easter Diary if they wish to do this activity.

Class 2 Weekly Update

The children had a fantastic day on Monday at Chirk Castle! There are many more fantastic photos to appear on the website, I will do my best to get these on this weekend 🙂

English: We have continued with our instruction writing and looking specifically at time vocabulary e.g. first, second, next, then, after that, etc. The children have enjoyed making up their own special creature and writing instructions on how to catch it.

Maths: We have finished off our work on position and direction, the children enjoyed playing on the play ground with PE equipment and following instructions on where to place the objects e.g. inside a hoop, on the left hand side of the bench… year 2 children also recapped on clockwise, anticlockwise, 1/4, 1/2 and 3/4 turns and continuing patterns of shapes.

History: In our topic this week the children designed their own coat of arms and wrote about their favourite things to decorate it.

Phonics: Year 1: alternative spelling for the ‘oa’ and ‘m’ phoneme.

Year 2: alternative spellings for the vowel phonemes.

Homework: I would like year 2 children to complete pages 10, 35 and 36 of their KS1 Maths SAT Buster book please and hand in for Friday 7th April. If year 1 children could have a practise at counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s this would be great as we have been doing this in some of our starter lessons in maths.

Class 2 Weekly update

English: This week we have started to recap on how to write commands and linked it to the book ‘We’re going on a bear hunt’, which the children have loved reading! We have had a go at writing instructions on how to catch a bear – and rehearsed something exciting to present to you during the Celebration Assembly next week.

Maths: Our focus in Maths this week has been position and direction, we started by looking at the compass points and discussing how to identify our left and right. We have then been using positional language e.g. above, below, in between, etc to describe where an object is.

Science: This week we looked at a range of different objects e.g. spoons, bottles, etc and discussed what materials they could be made out of, such as a spoon could be made out of metal, plastic and wood.

The children have come home with some lovely Mother’s Day cards they have created so please check their book bags!

There is also a reminder letter about our trip to Chirk Castle on Monday that the children are very excited about!

Class 2 weekly update

English: To start with the children looked at more suffixes at the end of words e.g. er, ier and est. Then we have focussed on our senses and which parts of our bodies use the senses. The children then used their senses to describe a range of different settings for example, a beach, rainforest, waterfall and city.

Maths: This week the children have been multiplying. Year 1 have been learning to count in 2s, 5s and 10s and used these skills to sequence numbers. Year 2 started the week using equipment to find answers to multiplication questions, then moved onto drawing pictures to support them and today they have been using their number facts to help them.

Science: We looked at metal and plastic in Science this week, the children discussed the use of each material and identified if they are bendy, strong, stretchy etc.

History: The children enjoyed looking at the artist Paul Klee in topic and how he used 2D shapes to make a painting of a castle. They then had a go at recreating his piece of art using 2D shapes and watercolour paints.

Class 2 Weekly Update

English – This week we have been describing characters feelings in books. The children have had some Grammar lessons. Year 1 have been using adjectives and suffixes ‘ed’ and ‘ing. Year 2 have been using contractions and suffixes ‘ful’, ‘ness’ and ‘less’.

Maths – We have been recapping on telling the time. Year 1 telling the time to the hour and half hour. Year 2 to the quarter hour and some have been challenged to the nearest five minutes.

Science – The children enjoyed their lesson experimenting with different materials, they were discussing whether materials could bend, squash, stretch etc and find out if they return to their original shape.

Homework – Thank you for the homework handed in this week. I would like year 2 children to complete pages 12 and 13 (conjunction/joining words) and 20 and 21 (apostrophes). Please could they hand this in on Friday 10th March.

Class 2 weekly update

English – We have been looking at non-fiction reports and how these tell us information. The children have then had a go at writing their own non-fiction text about ‘Ourselves’.

Maths – This week we have been learning about money and how to make amounts in a variety of different ways using different coins. Phonics – Year 1: Alternative spellings of the ‘ai’ phoneme.

Year 2: Continuing with homophones.

History – The children have been learning about taxes in the medieval times and how these were spent on castle repairs.

Science – We have been investigating natural and man-made materials and sorting them into groups.

Homework – The children have been provided with homework to complete over half term, due in: 3.3.17. Year 2 children have been given two booklets for SAT test paper practise accompanied by a letter explaining how I’d like them completed and Year 1 have an A3 sheet on days of the week and money.

Class 2 update

English

This week we have been thinking about newspaper reports. Linking to our class story ‘Funnybones’ the children imagined that they were in the story and have written newspaper reports about what they saw and heard the night the skeletons made lots of noise.

Maths

We have moved onto looking at capacity this week – the children have enjoyed measuring how much a container holds either using cupfuls (year 1) or millilitres and litres (year 2).

Science

The children have sorted materials using different criteria this week e.g. soft/hard, rough/smooth, transparent/not transparent, bendy/not bendy.

History

We have learned about who lives in castles this week and looked at the different jobs they do. The children enjoyed saying which job they’d have liked if they lived in the medieval times.

Phonics

Year 1: Alternative pronunciation of ‘y’, ‘ch’ and ‘ou’ grapheme.

Year 2: Homophones (words that sound the same but have a different spelling and different meaning).

It is the last session of tennis next Friday (17.2.17) – Please could the children come into school in their PE kits ready to start the session after registration, they may stay in their PE kits all day.

This week in Class 2…

English

The children began the week looking at syllables and counting syllables in our story ‘funnybones’. Then we made a story map, discussing the events that happen in the story and placing them in the correct order.

Maths

This week we have continued with measurement but moved onto measuring weight. Year 1 have been measuring with non-standard units such as cubes and marbles and year 2 have been using grams to measure objects in a balance scale.

Phonics

Year 1: Alternative pronunciations of ‘ea’, ‘er’ and ‘a’ graphemes.

Year 2: Apostrophes for possession.

Science

In Science this week the children explored how wind makes things move. They had lots of fun outside with bubbles.

History

We looked at a range of different castles today (even Hogwarts from Harry Potter), then the children made castles from junk and did a fantastic job!

Class 2 update

English

This week in English we started the story ‘Funnybones’ – the children have enjoyed listening to the story, rewriting the opening and role playing conversations between the skeletons.

Maths.

We have moved onto measures this week and have been focussing on measuring length. Year 1 have been measuring objects using non-standard units e.g. cubes and year 2 have been using cm and m to measure objects around the room. We have also been practising our estimating skills.

Please could year 2 continue to practise their times tables. I am sending home some more resources with the children tonight.

Science.

This week we have enjoyed discussing the effect Gravity has on objects – the children were given time to explore gravity with a bouncy ball in the hall. Then they drew pictures to show their findings.

History.

Continuing our topic on Castles, the children were shown pictures of a range of different castles in England. We discussed the different features of a castle e.g. drawbridge, portcullis, battlements, etc and then the children labelled pictures of castles with these features.

Class 2 Weekly update

English

This week we have discussed the importance of an introduction to stories and recounts and how they make the reader want to carry on reading. The children have practised writing their own introductions to a recount about a time they wish to share. We also recapped on the use of conjunctions to extend sentences.

Maths

Year 1: Recognising number bonds to 8 and 9 and learning how to double numbers.

Year 2: Using number facts to add and subtract and adding a single digit number to a two digit number, using 100 squares and number lines.

Phonics

Year 1: Exploring alternative pronunciation of the ‘i’ grapheme e.g. tin and mild, alternative pronunciation of the ‘o’ grapheme e.g. hot and don’t and alternative pronunciation of the ‘g’ grapheme e.g. gap and germ.

Year 2: Exploring words ending in ‘tion’ e.g. action and looking at words ending in ‘le’ e.g. kettle.

Science

The children investigated objects around the classroom that needed to be pushed or pulled to make them move. They then drew their findings and labelled and described them.

History

The children were shown two types of castles this week – motte and bailey castles made from wood and keep and bailey castles made from stone. They looked at the differences and discussed which would be easier to build and which would be easier to defend.
