As Sports Day is quickly approaching, the children have been putting in their final preparations around school. There has usually been a race or two to the classroom door in the morning and the field has been a hive of activity in the sunshine.
In English the children have done reading activities linked to topic work. Plants, animals and conservation have been the topics of interest. They have answered comprehension questions by recording and have learned to re-read passages to gain a greater understanding when using non-fiction texts. Some of the groups have done RWI where they have moved onto Non-Fiction texts and have been writing about their own experiences related to what they have read about. The children finished the week off by talking and writing about specific animals and birds in Britain which are on the verge of being extinct and said what might be causing this to happen.
In Maths the children have moved onto the area of Place Value. They have initially counted up to and beyond 100 objects by grouping them into 10’s and 1’s. We then moved onto them partitioning into 10’s and 1’s. At the end of the week we compared numbers containing hundreds, tens and ones.
In Science the children have been focussing on trees and have learned about the deciduous and evergreen trees around them in Bicton. They did some leaf identification, rubbings and then annotated diagrams of their favourite within the school grounds. They have already planted their broad beans and have devised a diary to track its progress. They all look to be growing really well and the children helped to saw a few canes down to support them too!
In Topic the children have collected their natural materials to go towards our conservation work of the school grounds. Animal homes, monitoring screens and hides are next on the agenda. We have also looked at local hills surrounding Shropshire, alongside work done about the River Seven.
I would like to say an enormous well done to all of the children who did the Phonics screening check. They all did very well and it was such a pleasure listening to how much they have all improved.
We would like to also say congratulations to Martha for getting Star of the Week award. Martha has been offering lots of insightful and helpful contributions to whole class and group discussions. She has also been a good friend around school.

The children have all enjoyed a glorious week both inside and outside of the classroom. There have been birthdays galore and a class full of grown up year 1’s!
The children have been reading new stories and information texts in their Read Write Inc lessons. They have had the focus of reading with expression and have had words to learn on sight. Towards the end of the week the children then continued with their novel study linked to Alfie and the Great Outdoors. They had new descriptive vocabulary to learn and they applied this when describing natural objects Alfie found in the countryside. We have also learnt about the rules of using plurals in our writing.
In Maths the children have continued with their multiplication and division topic. They started the week by grouping objects, then sharing into equal groups. They then finished the week by solving problems by both grouping and sharing.
In Topic the children have explored and discussed the features which make up their local Shropshire countryside. They have linked this to landscape study which included some initial artwork based on the work of David Hockney.
The new spelling lists have gone home today and will still be tested before half term. A big congratulations to Freya for getting Star of the Week trophy. Freya has given 100% effort and concentration in all lessons and has always tried to contribute both positively and constructively.

We have loved hearing Class 2’s memoires of their days in The Great British Countryside. No matter how far-fetched the stories have been, the descriptions of the places they have seen and things in which they have found on their adventures of the great outdoors have been just brilliant!
In English they have continued with their Read Write Inc stories. Orange books have been reading and writing about things in which they might like to be when they are grown up, and Purple books have been reading and writing about the tale of Tim and Tom. Yellow books have been using digital media to look at images and use story telling language to describe what they can see in a freeze frame using adventurous adjectives. The children have also had a focus on using varied conjunctions to join their ideas in writing. For the second half of the week Class 2 have started their novel study work. Our new story is Alfie and the Great Outdoors and we have used descriptive language in activities linked to the first bit of the story.
In Maths the children have continued with their next steps in learning involving multiplication concepts. They have been doing both practical independent and guided group activities. We started with making arrays, then solved problems using them. We then moved on to recognising and working out doubles. We then finished the week solving problems involving doubling. The children have also continued to chant and count in their 2’s, 5’s and 10’s.
In Music the children have been both reading and playing simple pieces of music together. Their timing is getting so much better.
For PE the children were involved in relay practice, egg and spoon, obstacle and sprint. It is nice to see a competitive edge from the children even at this early stage.
Spellings have gone home today. We are all very proud of how the children are learning them. They are getting real satisfaction from their results. We would like to also say that we are delighted that your children are reading for pleasure all of the time, and thank you for your support when reading with, to or listening to your child at home.
Finally may we say congratulations to Oscar who has won Star of the Week trophy for setting an unbelievable example in school for his peers and for putting in real effort in all of his lessons.
