English: This week we have been thinking about adding suffixes ‘s’ and ‘es’ to the end of words to change things from singular to plural and adding the prefix ‘un’ to change the meaning of adjectives e.g. kind to unkind. Thursday and Friday we focused on ‘Not Now, Bernard’. The children  have written great book reviews about our class story and thought about who they would recommend the story to and also had time to write questions to the monster in the story, asking things they’d like to find out e.g. why did he make a mess in class 2? Why did he eat Bernard? Etc.

Maths:  We have been looking at measurement – money this week. We have been learning to recognise coins and identify the differences between each coin, e.g. some are round, bronze, silver, big, small, etc. The children have been problem solving and reasoning e.g. Laura thinks she has 17p in her purse. Is she correct? Explain how you know.

Science: The children really enjoyed planting their beans on Tuesday and then confidently wrote a set of instructions on how to plant a bean.

History: The children were looking at seaside photographs in their book and completed the senses grid with how the photograph makes them feel. They thought about what they would see, hear, smell, taste and touch if they were there.

PE: We have continued to practise our athletic skills, ready for Sports Day in a few weeks.

Phonics Screening: The children have all completed their screening test this week and should all be really proud of themselves for working so hard! The children’s results will be in their reports at the end of the year as we do not find out the pass mark for a few weeks. Thank you for all of your support with reading and revising at home.

English: This week we have started our new book, ‘Not Now, Bernard!’ The children have acted out the story and today have written character descriptions. Some children thought of adjectives to describe each character and made a mind map of their ideas, some have written sentences about their chosen character and some children have used sub-headings to sort their descriptions e.g. what they look like, their personality and behaviour.

Maths: The children have been introduced to position and direction this week. We have discussed lots of vocabulary to describe turns e.g. quarter turn, half turn, three quarter turn and whole turn. We have been describing where objects are using the vocabulary, above, below, in the middle, left, right, up and down.

Science: We have thought about Carnivores, Herbivores and Omnivores this week in Science and learned about the different animals that fall into each category.

PE: We have been practising hard for Sports Day in PE. We have been practising running races, egg and spoon race, bean bag race and the sack race.

Handwriting: We do a lot of handwriting practise in Class 2 and most children have now become confident in using leaders and descenders in their everyday writing. Some children are now joining their writing!

Phonics Screening: Year 1 children will be doing their phonics screening next week. Please encourage your children to practise their sounding out and blending in preparation for this and any reading during the weekend would be greatly appreciated!

English: Yellow and Green group have been creating beach safety posters in English this week and Red and Blue group have been doing Read Write Inc.

Maths: We have been finding quarters of shapes this week, the children enjoyed drawing shapes on the playground and colouring in a quarter. The children have been looking at 1/4, 2/4 and 3/4 of shapes, leading onto finding quarters of an amount.

Science: This week the children were sorting animals into different categories e.g. mammals and non-mammals.

PE: The children have been practising and improving their bat and ball skills this week.

Art: In art, the children looked at the artist Natalie Pascoe. They then created their own seaside painting in the style of the artisit.

English: At the beginning of the week Red and Blue group have been looking at beach safety posters and leaflets and have been making their own. Yellow and Green group have been doing Read, Write, Inc. At the end of the week we have all been looking at the novel Owl Babies and have been thinking about the story from the Owl Mother’s perspective.

Maths: This week in Maths we have been looking at halving objects/shapes and numbers. At the start of the week we were taping half of everything we could find in the classroom, a practical activity which all of the children enjoyed. Then we went onto drawing what half looks like and writing it. The children used a ‘Halving Mat’ to help them halve numbers, using objects such as cubes or counters. It has been a busy week of halving in Maths and next week we will go onto quartering!

Science: The children have been thinking about their senses this week. They had a lovely lesson smelling, tasting, feeling, hearing and looking at a range of materials.

History: We spent Monday afternoon looking at old pictures of the seaside. The children then made a mind map of all their findings to compare the seaside in the past to how seaside holidays are now.

PE: The children have continued to practise their ball skills this week.

Art: In Art, the children drew four pictures of a shell using different materials. They used pens, pencils, chalks and crayons to create their artwork.

English: Linking to our story ‘Owl Babies’, the children received a letter from one of the owls this week and were challenged to write a reply to the owl reassuring them and telling them not to worry. They have also had a go at describing the setting of the story today.

Maths: The children have been recapping on division this week. They have had very practical lessons, sharing objects into equal groups. Children that have wanted more of a challenge have had a go at problem solving and reasoning. They have also been learning how to double and halve amounts.

Science: In Science the children were thinking about their senses and which body part they use for each sense. They also had to describe the job of each sense.

History: We have been learning about the features of seaside holidays this week. Some children had a go at writing a seaside poem and some children had to pretend they were on a seaside holiday and describe their time through a postcard.

PE: The children have been developing their ball skills this week, practising throwing and catching, independently and with a partner.

Art: In Art, we looked at the artist Monet and how he creates garden scenes using a dabbing technique with paint. The children were given cotton buds and asked to create a seaside scene using this technique. I was very impressed with the beautiful artwork produced!

RE: Today we listened to the story ‘The Prodigal Son’. We then role played the story and explored the differing perspectives and feelings of the father and both sons.

Well done for a great first week back Class 2!

English: We have continued with Read Write Inc this week and some groups have been writing seaside poems independently. We have also started our new class book ‘Owl Babies’. The children have been acting out the story, discussing the owl’s feelings at different stages and sequencing the story.

Maths: The children have been counting in twos, fives and tens this week and grouping objects to find the answer to statements such as ‘how many lots of…?’ or ‘how many groups of…?

Science: We have started our new Science topic this week ‘Animals including humans’. The children began with drawing and labelling their body parts.

History: We have made a good start on our new topic ‘Seaside Holidays – past and present’. The children made seaside pictures out of a range of materials, researched different seaside animals in information books and watched a Punch and Judy show. They then had a go at performing their own puppet show in groups.

Art: We made seaside collages today. The children were brilliant at ripping up their different textured paper and placing them into a seaside scenery.

The children have been given a Forest School letter today and a letter about our class trip to the Cheshire Ice Cream Farm. Please come and see me if these did not make it home and I can give you another copy.

English: The children have continued with their RWI books Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and yesterday the children were thinking about where the tiger in our class story had come from. We decided he had escaped from the zoo! To help the zoo find him, the children were asked to make a missing poster including lots of details about the tiger.

Maths: In Maths this week, the children have been learning to measure using a ruler in centimetres. They have measure lots of objects and identified items that are shorter than 20cm and longer than 20cm. We then moved onto using a metre ruler, discussing that this is made up of 100cms and thinking about objects that are longer than 1m and shorter than 1m.

Geography: We have now finished our topic on Jungles and Rainforests and to show what the children can remember about their learning, they made little booklets including as much information as possible.

D & T: The children really enjoyed D&T on Tuesday. They tasted lots of different fruits and vegetables and discussed which was their favourite. I was very impressed with children trying new fruits and vegetables that they hadn’t tried before e.g. Mango, passion fruit, etc.

Spellings: Class 2 will be tested on their new spellings when we come back from the Easter holidays on Friday 20th April 2018.

English: As well as Read Write Inc at the beginning of the week, the children have been looking at non-fiction texts. They have been looking at information texts about tigers and finding out interesting facts. They have learned about the key features of a non-fiction text e.g. headings, sub-headings, pictures, labels and captions, etc and had a go at writing their own.

Maths: In Maths we have moved onto measuring and comparing lengths and heights. Today the children were using non-standard units to measure objects e.g. how many cubes long is this pencil? Whiteboard? etc.

Science: In Science the children had a lots of fun building The Three Little Pigs houses out of a range of different materials. They were given junk modelling, Lego, straw and sticks and had to make the houses working with a group. The children were encouraged to think about which was the best material due to its properties e.g. which was the strongest? Which was bendy? Which would withstand the wind? etc.

Geography: The children learned about the different layers of a rain forest this week and what we would find in each layer, e.g. in the Forest floor layer we would find leaf litter and animals such as beetles and other insects, in the Understory layer we would find shrubs and frogs and snakes, in the Canopy layer we would find tall trees and animals such as sloths and toucans and in the Emergent layer we would find the extremely tall trees and butterflys and Eagles.

D&T: Just a reminder that on Tuesday the children will be trying a variety of different fruits and vegetables. I have had a few slips back however if I do not hear back I will make the assumption that your child is OK to try all fruits and vegetables. Please let me know if there is anything your child cannot try by Monday. Thank you!
