Maths

This week we have continued to explore the threeness of 3.  The children have compared 1,2 and 3.  Matched amounts to the correct numeral, used comparative language to compare e.g. – ‘bigger than’, and ‘biggest’, ‘smaller’ etc.    We have encouraged the children to use language – ‘two is bigger than one’, ‘three is the biggest’, ‘one is first’. ‘two is second’, ‘three is third’.

The children have found different ways to make 3 and prove it is three, they have used language such as ‘I know it is 3 because there are 2 on top and another one underneath, 2 and 1 is 3.’   We have explored how it doesn’t matter if we move the objects around there still will be 3.

Phonics

This week we have revised all the sounds covered so far – m a s d t and looked at i this week.

When we write ‘i’ we say down the insects body and a dot for his head.  Here is a revision sheet – i

The children have enjoyed finding the sounds hidden around the classroom and having a go at writing them.

We have played word time games – making CVC from the sounds covered so far e.g. sat, sit, sad, Sam, Sid, mad, mat, dad, did, dot, etc.

Week 2

The children in Class One have had another super week.  They have shared their favourite nursery rhymes and enjoyed singing them as a class.  We have had fun listening for and spotting the rhyming words, then  thinking of new rhyming words.  We focussed on Humpty Dumpty and had fun cutting out his pieces to try and put him back together again!

On Thursday we had a practice fire drill, Class One children did a great job of calmly leaving the classroom and lining up on the playground.  They spent the rest of the day pretending to be Fire Fighters, putting out fires and rescuing kittens!

At the beginning of the week the children were busy finding one and then two things.  We remembered that 1 add another makes 2, and 2 take away 1 leaves 1.

Making 3 – the children exlored how 2 things add 1 more makes 3, and 1 thing add 2 more makes 3.  They made use of the items in the classroom to prove it.

This week we have looked at the phonemes ‘s’ and ‘d’.  When we write the sounds the children say:

‘s’ – slither down the snake

‘d’ – around the dinosaurs bottom, up his tall neck and down to his feet.

The children are making good use of the class room resources to enhance their learning through play.

1st week at School

The children in Class 1 have had a super start to their first week at school.  They have been very busy in the class room and outside area.  They have all done really well and we are really proud of the class.

This week we have looked at the letter sounds ‘m’ and ‘a’.  The children have also practised how to form these letters:

m – Maisie Mountain, mountain

a- around the apple and down the leaf

In Maths we have looked at number 1 and the concept of ‘oneness; – one is a single unit and it doesn’t matter about the size of what is been counted e.g. one elephant, one ant. The children then explored what happens when there is another 1 and  how they come together to make 2 and how 2 can be separated into 1 and another 1.

The children did really well changing into their PE kits and taking part in their first dance lesson with Mr Sudlow.  This term they will be basing their dance moves on music from the Jungle book.

All children have now been allocated a reading book and they have all chosen a library book to share with you at home.

Class 1 round up

Class 1 have been very busy this last week.

Read Write Inc:

The children have continued to revise all of Set 1 and Set 2 sounds/words  and learn Set 3 sounds/words.  Over the week we have sent home the story words and ditties for you to practise at home.  We have also looked at

The children have used their phonics knowledge to write sentences using words with these sounds.  Some children have also made a Wanted poster for one of the characters from their group Story Book  – Black Hat Bob.

Maths

We have concentrated on understanding the parts of numbers to 10 and what a teen number is (tens and ones).  The children have used a variety of resources to help them show and explain their reasoning.

Here is a lovely 10 frame activity to play (the fill option)  https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Ten-Frame/

We have moved like the animals in the story and discussed what our favourites are.  Next week we will research and write about our favourite animal/s.

Understanding the World/RE

Over the last few weeks we have been learning about the celebration of Wesak (Budda’s birthday).   The children have talked about how we treat each other and linked this to our whole school theme of Kindness. To find out more: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/watch/lets-celebrate-wesak
