Photoclub – new talent & winter portraits!

We made a good start to Photoclub last week with Christian and Joe and this week Evie and Aaron joined us and we had a go in the challenging winter light at some outdoor portraits.  Everyone had a go at framing some clutter free backgrounds and also posing for their partner – don’t they all look lovely!

Pirate Ships

Today Class One have been learning all about pirate ships.  We looked at all the features of pirate ships this morning and the children drew the features onto some pirate ship templates.  This afternoon the children made model pirate ships using a range of materials.  They all worked really hard and made some super pirate ships!

Class 5 News week ending 17th January

Literacy

Our writing activities this week have all been linked to our new text The Vanishing Rainforest.  We have looked at how and why the characters’ emotions changed at different points in the text, rewritten the text in role as various characters and written book reviews using examples from the text to explain our views.

Numeracy

In Maths, we have focused on converting fractions to percentages and learnt how to find any percentage using our knowledge of how to find 10% of a number.

Other activities included: learning about the different countries of South America, their capital cities and geographical features of the continent; a practical exploratory task examining different rocks to decide how to find the hardest rock in a given sample and creating group compositions of Brazil/rainforest-inspired music.

Please could I remind children to have their P.E. kit in School for Tuesday and Thursday and to make sure that their jogging bottoms do not trail over their heels, as we are using the apparatus this term.

Thank you as always for your support.

Mr and Mrs Conde’s New Arrival!

Just to let you know that Mrs Conde had a baby girl, Harriet Elizabeth, on Wednesday afternoon weighing 6lb 14 (and a little bit!) Mum and baby are doing really well and went home this afternoon.

We pass on our best wishes and congratulations on behalf of everyone at Bicton School.

Pirate Day in Class 1

Class 1 have had lots of fun on their pirate adventure today…

We first of all found a treasure map from the pirates leading us to Billy Bear.  When we found him we met pirate ‘Jim Bones’ who had taken him and had to hand over 10 gold coins for his release.  You’ll be happy to know that Billy Bear is now safe and sound in Class 1!

After we realised that Jim Bones was a friendly pirate we invited him into our class where he talked to us all about pirates and what they do.

It’s been a lovely day and all the children looked fantastic in their costumes and have really enjoyed themselves.  Thank you for making such an effort.

Weekly Newsletter 17.01.14

Children have had another busy week and we thank you for your support helping your child with homework, spellings, reading and for any special activities planned by individual classes.

We hope you are making full use of the School website, which we are very proud of, to check what is going on or coming up in your child’s class, read about and see photos of what your child has been learning this week and check the calendar for details on clubs, trips, etc. There is an expectation on us to limit printing as much as possible and the website has had a positive impact on how we communicate with yourselves.

If you do not have access to the Internet, however, please speak to Mrs Jones or Mrs Neal at the Office and they will arrange for a weekly newsletter to be sent home with your child.

Year 6 Booster

Well done to all the Year 6 children in Booster Club tonight. This is the first time ever that we have had every Year 6 attending and it will hopefully continue.

I asked all the children if there was anything specific that they would like to revisit over the forthcoming weeks and we agreed on a list of areas to focus on.  Every child worked really hard and, although I reassured them that not everyone has the same understanding and pace, please let me know if your child mentions finding something difficult.  I will not be introducing any new areas of maths or literacy but we will, however, be focusing on test techniques and looking at past papers, some of which may be new to them.

Thank you again for encouraging your child to attend and for your support.

Quick Sticks Hockey

Well done to the Year 5 and 6 children who took part in the Quick Sticks hockey event at The Corbet School this morning.  Although they did not win the tournament, they beat the overall winners which they were extremely proud of and enjoyed playing with wooden sticks for the first time!

Thank you to the parents who accompanied the team and cheered them on so enthusiastically.
