Fibre optic broadband posters

Just a reminder to children in Classes 4 and 5 that the closing date for the fibre optic broadband posters is Friday 14th March. The poster should sum up what fibre optic broadband would mean to your household e.g. faster download speeds, and the winning design will be displayed on the green cabinet on Holyhead Road at the end of Bicton Lane.

Football Club

Just to clarify, Football Club on Wednesday will be open to all children in Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 including Year 3 children in Class 3.

We will inform you as to when Football Club for children in Reception, Years 1 and 2 will restart, as soon as we know.

Classes 4 and 5 Football

Football Club will start again this week on Wednesday from 3:15 until 4:25 only for Classes 4 and 5. We are hoping to restart football for the other classes in the next couple of weeks.
The field has started to dry out but is quite muddy so football boots are preferable but otherwise old trainers will be ok.

Class 5 News week ending 28th February

Literacy

We’ve been looking at writing letters for a ‘real’ purpose and children were given the task of writing a letter of complaint about a meal that they were not happy with. We discussed the type of things that might have been ‘wrong’ e.g. food under/overcooked, long waiting times, dirty crockery, ovecharging, etc. You would not believe the stories I have heard about some of your experiences when eating out!

Later in the week, children were given another child’s letter to reply to, in role as the manager of an establishment; they needed to make sure that they replied to the specific complaints and, again, we discussed the type of comments/ token of apology which may have been offered.

Numeracy

We’ve had an extremely busy week in maths revisiting and extending a range of topics including: using the vocabulary of parallel and perpendicular when reflecting shapes in all four axes, estimating and measuring length, reading unmarked divisions on scales and using the vocabulary of probability to discuss the chance of something happening. We also looked at area and perimeter which we will be continuing with next week.

Science

Evaporation and condensation are the main areas which we are focusing on at the moment and we will be using our knowledge of these processes to plan and carry out group investigations over the next couple of weeks.

Other activities…

Year 5s presented their half-term homework on persuading tourists to visit a location or attraction in Brazil; they are currently researching the Amazonian city of Manaus with a view to comparing it to different aspects of Shrewsbury.  In R.E., we have continued with our work on global citizenship and started to look at the work of different religious and aid organisations around the world. In P.E. we have revisited indoor games and enjoyed playing competitive team games with what appears to be an emphasis on competitive!

Year 6 SATs preparation

Home-link books and letters home

Please could we ask that children who travel home on the bus are clear about whether they are going on the bus or are being collected at the end of the school day. A note can be written in home-link books for children in Classes 1, 2 and 3 which staff can use to check if children are unsure; older children in Classes 4 and 5 should be able to remember how they are travelling home. This will help staff and avoid Mrs Neal or Mrs Jones having to contact you when a child is unsure.

Could we also ask you to check your child’s bag for letters or first aid slips being sent home. This is particularly important for bumped head slips where guidelines have recently changed and request that parents and carers observe their child for 72 hours following a bumped head incident.

Class 1 bake off

Today Class 1 have had lots of fun baking biscuits.  This has linked in with our maths focus this week on shape.  The children followed the instructions very carefully and made fish shaped biscuits by moulding a circle and triangle out of the dough.

We hope you enjoy eating them!

Breakfast Club

We’ve noticed that several children are bringing in spreads for toast, as well as different cereals, to eat at Breakfast Club.  Please could we ask you not to send in food items as we need to consider other children’s allergies and food intolerances.  We already provide a range of cereals and spreads to cater for children’s different tastes but, after talking to children in Breakfast Club this week, we will be ordering additional spreads for them to choose from next week.
